A few weeks ago Aleah started having a really hard time going to sleep at night. We would put her to bed at her usual time, around 7:30, and then things would get really frustrating. She would ask me to put her blanket over her arms, then she wanted her arms out, then in, then out. She wanted her dog in the blanket, no out of the blanket. Then she wanted to rock in the rocking chair. Ugh! After a few minutes of this I would tell her that I was not coming in again and she needed to go to sleep. Then she would cry and cry forever! She had NEVER done that before. Even when she was a baby the longest she would cry was five minutes. She was staying up until 9:30 or 10 and I was going crazy!
Then I was talking to my friend who's son is only a few days younger than Aleah and she started telling me that she was having a really hard time getting him to go to bed at night. When she told me what he was doing I had to laugh because it was identical to what Aleah was doing. She said that they must be ready to drop their naps. What? NO! I had been dreading the day that Aleah would drop her nap and thought that I had at least a few more months.
Well, I didn't want to drop her nap but I did want my evenings back! So I decided to try having her do quiet time for an hour. I think it is important for her to have some down time and some time to herself. I also think that it is important for me to have some time to myself!
So I sat her down and said, "Aleah, we need to have a talk. Do you know what that means?" She said, "Yes." Haha, she is so cute! Then I told her that she was growing up and that means that some days she doesn't need a nap. Some days she just needs quiet time. I explained all the rules of quiet time to her and then told her about all the fun things she gets to do like puzzles, coloring, and reading. She was so excited! She ran right into her room and did a really good job.
The next day when I told her that it was time for quiet time she said, "Yay, I'm so excited! Quiet time is so much fun!" It has been really fun. I love listening to her read and sing. I love when I go in to get her and she tells me with a big smile about all the things she did, "All by myself!"
Some days she still falls asleep, but she is doing a great job! I love that she is growing up, but honestly I did cry a little the first day.
